Summercourse 2009

Robot, walk that line!

It has always been a dream of mankind to create life in our own image. To create machines to do harsh and heavy work for us. To build robots. Do you want to learn how? Then this course will be the right choice for you.

The course will feature comprehensive introductory lectures, paired with all the specifics you will need to face the challenge of building your own robot and in the culmination of what might be the time of your life you will test your design against the designs of your fellow participants.

In hot and sunny August in Vienna, you will learn about the latest in robot mechanics and artificial intelligence, from a host of different lecturers with different backgrounds. And in the afternoons you will be able to work in a lovely foursome on your own real robot! Each team will engage a different technique, from embodied and social robotics to dynamical emergent behaviour and classical Artificial Intelligence. This course is for every skill level - from the totally unexperienced chemistry student to the highly competent computer science hacker! In the end you will show off your creativity or compete against the other teams in one of the classical robot challenges like Mini-Sumo or line-following! We will put you into teams of similar level of expertise, so please don't forget to tell us your experience/knowledge with robots and programming!

Of course, this course is not only about those lovely Terminator babies of yours! (They'll be back anyways;)

You will get to see the historic city of Vienna, once the heart of half of Europe. You will party all night and work all day. You will visit the Neusiedler Lake, where we will show you a fully robotic sailing boat, hike between the wine yards, and of course will taste some of Austria's excellent wines! And, that's not all! At the end you will know why so many tourist visit this great city each year to see the splendour and to feel the atmosphere of past imperial and modern times. Vienna waits for you!
